When will the house open for tours?

The Estate expects to expand access and programming in early 2027. Currently, the home is open for member-only events, Fair Lane Music Guild concerts, and tours during our annual Restoration Showcase in May for Historic Preservation Month. Join our newsletter for updates!

What is happening at the Powerhouse and Garage?

The restoration project is expanding beyond the Main House to also include the Powerhouse and Garage. Updates will be shared through social media and on our website as we make progress.

Where are your restrooms?

There are currently two regularly maintained portable restrooms in the parking lot. A new restroom facility is included as part of our future plans.

Does the Ford family or Ford Motor Company own the Estate?

No. The Henry Ford Estate, Inc. is an independent 501c3 nonprofit organization established in 2011 and serves as the governing body to oversee the restoration, reinterpretation, and operation of this national historic landmark.

How are you paying for everything?

The restoration is supported through various grants, capital campaigns, and generous donations from individual donors. Visit our donor wall to see the hundreds of people and organizations who have contributed. We invite you to join us!

Why is the restoration taking so long?

To put it simply: the project is immense in scope. After Henry and Clara Ford’s deaths, nearly every object at the Estate was sold at auction. Due to this, our project is not focused solely on the restoration of historic finishes, but also the recreation of many furnishings. These intricate decorative arts projects can take years to produce. This approach makes Fair Lane a unique project in the world of historic preservation. Additionally, a significant investment in infrastructure is needed to ensure our nearly 110-year-old buildings are preserved for future generations.

Will the restaurant be reopened?

The Estate has no plans to reopen a restaurant, due to the wear and tear that a functioning kitchen puts on a historic site.

What are the plans for the Estate?

The Estate is undergoing a full restoration. The Main House will be restored to the year 1919 to reflect the Fords’ original design intent for their home. Restoration of the Powerhouse, Garage, and Potting Shed is underway.

Why isn’t the Ford family funding the restoration?

The Ford family is integral to the plans for the Henry Ford Estate with members active on the estate’s Board of Trustees, the Capital Campaign committee, and as providers of financial support. It is important for the Estate’s future success and sustainability that a broad support base be established. As an independent nonprofit entity, Henry Ford Estate, Inc. welcomes and needs the support of individuals and companies across the region, country, and world that have been touched by the legacy of Clara and Henry Ford.

Can I host my event (baby shower/wedding shower/wedding/meeting) here?

No. As restoration and construction work is ongoing, only a limited number of generally smaller events can be accommodated. See our website for more information and updates.

Can I go fishing in the river behind the house?

Fishing is prohibited on Fair Lane grounds.

Can I donate an artifact or archival material?

Fair Lane is not an active collecting institution, so we cannot accept any unsolicited donations. For further clarification, please contact us at info@henryfordestate.org.
